West Winch Roll of Honour
The village of West Winch is situated just south of King's Lynn. The memorial takes the form of a granite cross inset with marble in front of the church.
The picture shows the West Winch memorial after it has been cleaned and the three names of the fallen from Setchey added. David Skerritt the Secretary arranged for the work to be carried out in November 2008. We are grateful to the parish council for there contributions towards the work.
Note: Stan Langley researched the 1914-18 casualties listed on the memorial some five to six years ago in connection with the Norfolk Museums Service War Memorials Project. Copies of a booklet, produced as a result of his enquiries, were deposited with the Norfolk Regimental Museum, the Norfolk Family History Society, Trues Yard (North End Trust, King's Lynn) and the King's Lynn Library. In addition to the information gathered from the CWGC, contents include transcripts of press reports - and reference to some other casualties who had links to West Winch and to neighbouring Setchey.
As direct result of his endeavours the local branch of the British Legion benefited from the sale of the booklets, and the West Winch Parish Council arranged for refurbishment of the memorial as part of their programme to mark the Millennium. Insertion of a new panel listing the names of the fallen was included in the refurbishment - as is clear from Ray Dowsett's excellent photograph - and this corrected an error by the masons on the original.
